One of the burdens of being legendary, is that everything you do or say is studied meticulously under a microscope and everybody has a opinion about all things. So how are you gonna do the right thing? Well one thing is for sure, the family Van Halen have their own view on all things Van Halen and decided to do what they do best. That is, make a new record and start touring. Does it matter they got back with David Lee Roth and that the unique Michael Anthony is replaced by son Wolfgang?
For me the answer to both is no. Don´t get me wrong, it is strange Sammy and Michael are gone (luckily they formed Chickenfoot, and their 2 albums are on the site) but a Van Halen with DLR on board is not strange either. I mean, Panama or Jump anyone?
So this new baby is to me a perfect marriage of the VH of old and that of around the Balance era. So at times more heavy, but all things we love about the band are here. In case you have no clue where I am aiming at, you are either reading something you don´t care about, or have been living under a rock for the last 30 years or so. So yes, Dave´s tongue in cheek lyrics accompanied by those great harmonies, ferocious drumming from Alex, and stunning solo´s and mighty riffs from Edward. And new kid Wolfie fits in like he was born for it. Instant Van Halen, I love it.
So in my humble opinion this is a very welcomed return. More please!
